Massachusetts coronavirus cases increase by 1,591, following the largest surge in months
Massachusetts health officials reported on Friday 1,591 new coronavirus cases, following the maximum number of cases per day on Thursday, with more than four months of 1,793 new infections.
The number of cases of highly infectious delta mutations is increasing rapidly, and the number of hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID is also increasing.
With a daily surge of 1,591 cases, the total number of cases of coronavirus in the state is 703,961. Currently, the average number of cases for 7 days is 1,005, an increase from 741 at the beginning of the month.
The daily average of positive rates has declined in recent weeks, as officials point out that this may be a sign that the case is beginning to stabilize. The positive rate was 2.75%, a slight decrease from 2.98% a few weeks ago.
State health officials also reported six new COVID deaths. The state’s recorded death toll is currently 18,218. The daily average of deaths is currently 5.3, up from about 3.0 in late July.
COVID hospitalizations increased on Friday after decreasing for two consecutive days on Wednesday and Thursday. The increase of 7 patients will result in hospitalization for a total of 572 patients.
Currently, there are 149 patients in the intensive care unit and 78 are intubated.
Of the total of 572 patients, 160 are fully vaccinated — or 27%. Unvaccinated people are at much higher risk in severe cases.
Approximately 91% of hospital beds in the state are used and 79% of ICU beds are occupied. More than half of the inpatients are over 80 years old.
As of Friday, more than 4.47 million Massachusetts residents were fully vaccinated, or about 64% of the state. More than 4.69 million people receive at least one dose, which is 67% of the state.
The Massachusetts vaccination initiative, Vax Millions, has ended and a total of 10 winners have been selected for the award.
