Columbia, Missouri-There is a new type of asphalt used on some roads in Missouri that is environmentally friendly.
Instead of throwing PET bottles and bags into landfills, the University of Missouri is working with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and Dow to test whether recycled plastic waste can be mixed with asphalt.
Professor Bill Butler of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Missouri, said asphalt pavement is usually made of crushed rock, gravel, or sand. He leads a project to add plastic waste to the ingredient list.
“We were the first to publish this material on real roads under real traffic,” Butler said. “In this case, the plastic or plastic waste is chemically compatible with asphalt. Both come from crude oil.”
About two years ago, Butler asked if Jim Fitterling, a graduate of the University of Missouri and CEO of Dow, knew how to find a solution to the plastic waste problem.
“The number one thing we had to think about was how to put the recycled material into the asphalt,” Butler said.
“You can wait and put in recycled material at the final stage, like a hot mix asphalt plant here in Colombia. In that case, you can recycle a lot of recycled material.”
The asphalt mixture of plastic waste has undergone actual testing in Colombia. There, MoDOT is using it to begin repaving two miles of Stadium Boulevard from East College Avenue to Highway 63. More than 35,000 vehicles use the road every day.
“We used over a million beverage bottles or nearly three million plastic bags on just a few miles of demonstration pavement,” Buttlar said.
According to Buttlar, recycled plastic melts into pellets and mixes with asphalt.
