Poor vaccination coverage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could lead to the recurrence of a deadly disease
Kinshasa / Geneva / New York, May 15, 2020 UNICEF today cautioned that the lower vaccination coverage currently reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) increases the risk of deadly illnesses such as polio, measles and yellow fever.
The decline in the first two months of the year may have been due to established issues such as poor cold chain systems, poor coverage and inventory supply. However, the DRC Immunization Extended Program (EPI) is now almost certainly faced with a new challenge that will make the situation worse: COVID-19. Healthcare workers who routinely vaccinate do not have the proper equipment to protect themselves, their caregivers, and their children from coronaviruses. Parents are reluctant to participate in vaccination sessions, fearing that themselves and their children will be exposed to COVID-19.
Vaccination coverage was lower in January and February 2020 compared to the same two months of 2019. Vaccination coverage for all recommended childhood illnesses (hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, Hib) 8 Vaccination coverage for poliovirus is 8.4% for IPV and 5.4% for OPV3. The coverage of other vaccines against chickenpox, measles, yellow fever, Streptococcus pneumoniae and rotavirus decreased by 4.5-1.5%.
Converting percentages to numbers makes the numbers amazing. 86,905 children have not received the oral polio vaccine. 74,860 children have not been vaccinated with tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis cough hepatitis B-Hib3 vaccine. 107,010 have not received the yellow fever vaccine. And 84,676 children have not been vaccinated against measles.
“If this downward trend in vaccination coverage continues, Profit for the last two years Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said: “The higher the number of unvaccinated or unvaccinated children, the higher the risk of developing the disease, which only strains the already overloaded medical system.”
Wagers are higher in countries where only 35% of children aged 12 to 23 months are fully vaccinated before their first birthday. DRCs may lose polio-less certification and may have measles recurrence and yellow fever outbreaks. This can have devastating effects on vulnerable children in areas affected by conflict and anxiety, or children living in remote areas of the country.
UNICEF urges the Democratic Republic of the Congo to launch a catch-up campaign to strengthen immunization activities around the world and vaccinate all children with life-saving vaccines. There is a need for vaccine supplies and consumables to increase vaccine supply, as well as personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. The organization also calls on international donors to support the government’s vaccination efforts by providing generous multi-year support.
