New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern assured the host that she was safe and resumed the interview.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was not troubled by the earthquake that struck the capital Wellington on Monday while she was conducting a live TV interview, and she quietly continued the program.

Ardern, who became prime minister in 2017, is very popular in New Zealand because of her handling of multiple crises – mass shootings in Christchurch last year, a volcanic eruption in December and the last Corona virus epidemic.

Wellington and its surrounding areas were shaken by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake and its epicenter is 30 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of Levin, a city near the capital, at a depth of 37 kilometers, according to Jeonet.

Ardern was speaking in a live television interview at the time from the parliament building, and called the Beehive.

“We have a slight earthquake here, Ryan …” she told program host Ryan Bridge, shaking with the camera and other things around her.

“A very decent jolt here … if you see things moving behind me, the beehive is moving a little more than most,” she said.

Ardern assured the host that it was safe and resumed the interview.

Ardern confirmed at a press conference later that there were no damage or injuries, but the vibration that lasted for more than 30 seconds caused panic in Wellington as many people in offices and homes were sitting under their tables to cover.

New Zealand lies on a seismically active “ring of fire”, an arc that spans 40,000 km of volcanoes and ocean trenches that surround much of the Pacific Ocean.

Christchurch is still recovering from a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in 2011 that killed 185 people.

In 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Kaikoura on the South Island, killing two and causing billions of dollars in losses, including in the capital, Wellington, on the North Island.
