Thousands of years later, signs of awakening may appear on a dormant volcano in Aleutian

The three Aleutian volcanoes that have been erupting simultaneously in recent months can be joined by a fourth. Davidov volcano in Western Aleutian has remained inactive for thousands of years. But a series of measured earthquakes around the dormant volcano has some researchers wondering if Davidoff is waking up.

Rising over 1,000 feet from the Bering Sea, Davidoff is what remains of an ancient caldera. It is located on the Rat Islands in the far west of the Aleutians, approximately 200 miles west of Adak – so far west that it is actually considered the Eastern Hemisphere.

The volcano has not been active at least since the time Russian explorers began keeping records in 1760. But researchers say it likely remained dormant for much longer than that, possibly as long as 10,000 years.

But a swarm of earthquakes shook the area beginning on December 7th, and that’s what kept researchers watching closely.

Matthew Haney is a geophysicist working at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. He said that although Davidoff is not considered historically active, “the process of subduction leading to volcanism along the Aleutian Arc has not stopped”, and “there is still potential for activity.”

He says the earthquakes increased in magnitude during the week, which may indicate that the earthquakes were not due to tectonic shifts, but rather to magma flowing under the volcano.

“With tectonic earthquakes, the first earthquake is usually the biggest, and then there’s a bunch of aftershocks after that. So I think this earthquake caught our eye last week because the biggest earthquake wasn’t the first.” volcanic.”

Davidoff is far from threatening any communities, but Haney says it could pose a risk to air traffic. AVO raised Davidof’s warning level to yellow last Friday due to the possibility of this happening.
