French Parliament has approved legislation to exclude unvaccinated people from restaurants, sports arenas and other venues
The Paris-French Parliament passed a law on Sunday excluding unvaccinated people from all restaurants, sports arenas and other venues.
Parliament adopted the law with a vote of 215-58. Centrist President Emmanuel Macron wanted the bill to move faster, but was slightly delayed by resistance from both left and right lawmakers and hundreds of amendments.
Over 91% of French adults are already fully vaccinated, and some critics question whether the “vaccine path” makes a big difference.
The Macron government hopes that the new path will be sufficient to limit the number of patients filling tense hospitals across the country without resorting to new blockades. New containment measures will have a new impact on the economy — and may also cloud Macron’s chances of reelection in the April 10 presidential vote.
So far, France has required a COVID-19 pass to go to restaurants, cinemas, museums, and many places across the country, but if it shows a recent negative test or evidence of a recent recovery, it has not been vaccinated. Vaccinated people are admitted to the country.
The new law requires full vaccination of tourist destinations, many trains and such places, including all domestic flights, and applies to all persons over the age of 16. There are some exceptions to those who have recently recovered from COVID-19. The law also imposes stricter fines on fake passes and allows identity checks to avoid fraud.
More than 76% of French ICU beds are occupied by virus patients, most of whom are unvaccinated and about 200 people with the virus die daily. Like many countries, France is aware of Omicron variants and has recorded more than 2,800 positive cases per 100,000 people in the past week.
