UN sees damages from Afghan earthquake

Kandahar: The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is leading an inter-agency assessment team deployed to the Kadis district of Badghis province in Afghanistan in the wake of the 5.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Monday.

Initial reports indicate that 26 people were killed and four injured. Hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Tuesday that heavy rains before the earthquake made brick homes more vulnerable to damage.

People whose homes have been damaged or destroyed are sheltering their relatives and other members of their communities.

Initial reports indicate that there is an urgent need for food, shelter, non-food items and heating materials.
