New Zealand actor and Once Were Warriors star Pete Smith dies, age 63

Takahue actor Pete Smith, who starred in Once Were Warriors, A Quiet Earth and The Piano, has died.

Smith, of Te Rarawa and Te Aupouri descent, passed away at home on Saturday following a long-running battle with kidney disease.

The former actor, who hailed from Manukau Herekino, was a father to six children and leaves behind his wife Mona Papalii. He was 63.

He was sick for a long time, so its kind of bittersweet, explained Smiths son Poumau Papali’i-Smith.

For the last seven years he had been on dialysis which took its toll on him over the years. Within the last two years he was also diagnosed with dementia.

We started doing dialysis at home but over the last few weeks he suffered an infection which he fought for the last four weeks.

He passed on Saturday. We are happy that he didn’t have to suffer any longer.

The former actor played the role of Uncle Dooley in the 1994 film, alongside Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis, and played Apeman in the 1999 follow-up What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?

Smith made his screen debut with a GOFTA-winning role in the 1985 Kiwi science fiction film The Quiet Earth, portraying a survivor of a mysterious apocalyptic event.

He went on to appear in other notable New Zealand films, including Jane Campions 1993 drama The Piano, and also featured as an Orc in Sir Peter Jacksons The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003).

Papali’i-Smith said his fathers passing was a great loss for the wider Far North community.

For sure. He was always out in the community filming documentaries with the local talent up here with his gardening show, he said.

He was a bit of a man of the people, always putting other people before himself.

Smith also starred in several television shows, including plainclothes (1995), Shortland Street (1999), Greenstone (1999), and Mataku (2001-2004).

He later starred in the drama series The Market (2005), earning the gong for Best Performance by a supporting actor at the Screen Awards.

Smith went on to co-create and present Far North gardening show Maramataka – Once Were Gardeners, and starred in the 2010 film Hugh and Heke.
