Taiwan lifts ban on Japanese food imports linked to Fukushima disaster

TAIPEI (Kyodo) – Taiwan on Monday lifted a ban on food imports from Fukushima and four other Japanese prefectures in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Amid efforts to secure Japanese support for its bid to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement, Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration said the ban on food products from Fukushima, Ibaraki, Gunma, Tochigi and Chiba prefectures “will be adjusted” on the basis of a risk-change from the ban based on production regions.

The ban has been lifted except for some food items such as mushrooms and meat from wild animals. Food products from the five governorates are still required to carry the governorate’s marks of origin and documents proving that they have passed the radiological examination.

In March 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami (tsunami) triggered meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In the wake of the disaster, 55 countries and regions have imposed import restrictions on Japanese food products, but most have already lifted them.

In a 2018 referendum, Taiwan voters chose to keep the ban, after which President Tsai Ing-wen’s government continued to ban food imports from the provinces.

But the government also argued that easing the embargo would facilitate Taiwan’s application to join the trade deal, known officially as the Comprehensive and Advanced Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Japan played a leading role in negotiations on the trade agreement after the United States withdrew in 2017 during the administration of President Donald Trump.

Taiwan submitted its application in September last year, just days after mainland China submitted its membership application.
