“Covid has a lot of answers”: Cervical cancer bride says pandemic delay diagnosis
Stage 2 cervical cancer fighting the bride is said to have been delayed due to Covid.
Lauren Ober, known as Rory, 34, says he should have taken the smear test in July 2020. However, she was not invited until November 2021.
Rory says, “You may not really know when the cancer started,” but I’m afraid that previous smears couldn’t pick it up.

In July 2019, while living in London, she suffered from abnormal bleeding, but was told she had nothing to worry about. And in 2013, she was told that her abnormalities had returned on her examination, but they were associated with her previous diagnosis of HPV.
Rory, who lives in Middleton and is planning to get married in April, said:
“Through Covid, the service I received from my doctor was horrifying.
“I had all these symptoms, but nothing was recognized and they weren’t willing to take me to the test.
“I kept trying self-diagnosis. I asked if I could test for uterine fibroids or endometriosis.
“I went to scan and ultrasonography, but all I really needed was a smear.
“I was very angry when I was diagnosed, but I am also angry.
“Everything was put on hold during Covid-it caused a lot of extra pain.”
Rory, who runs a second-hand clothing business in e-commerce, said the cancer is widespread, but hesitates about radiation and chemotherapy, is afraid to give birth, and prefers alternatives.
She said: “I don’t want them if I can avoid them either.
“I’m pretty opposed to what the NHS has to offer, as it looks pretty barbaric and outdated.”
Jane Pilkington, Interim Director of Population Health for the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, said:
“Currently, medical professionals are working with Lauren on treatment and care options to help her get the support she needs.
“Work is underway across Manchester to work on the planned care backlog and reduce patient wait times.
“During the Covid-19 pandemic, cancer treatment and care were prioritized, but unfortunately all NHS services were affected to some extent.”
A gofundme A page has been set up to help Rory.
NHS advice on screening:
- Women and people aged 25-64 years with a cervix are screened. Women enrolled as general practitioners are invited to regular screening every 3 years for women aged 25-49 and every 5 years for women aged 50-64.
- Cervical cancer screening is not a cancer test. Checking for the high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes almost all cervical cancers, helps prevent cervical cancers. This means that abnormalities in the cells of the cervix can be treated. If left untreated, these cells can develop into cancer.
- Regular cervical cancer screening is the best way to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer by detecting abnormal cells in the cervix early. However, like other screening tests, it is not 100% accurate.
- The symptoms of cervical cancer are not always obvious and may not cause any symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. Therefore, it is important to attend all appointments for cervical examination.
- If you experience symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, changes in vaginal discharge, or pain, contact your doctor. Do not wait until the cervical screening test expires.
- Cervical examination saves lives-don’t ignore the invitation to have a cervical examination. If you miss the last one, make an appointment with your GP.
- If someone is diagnosed with cervical cancer, review their screening history to ensure that cervical cancer screening tests and investigations are in line with national NHS cervical cancer screening program standards. To do. The information gathered will help improve the program and learn more about how cancer develops and is diagnosed.
