Grand Princess passengers disembark for the third day
The cruise ship Grand Princess was scheduled to continue disembarking passengers for a third day Wednesday in Oakland, California, after the ship's passengers were in limbo since Thursday when cases of coronavirus were discovered on board. AtBy Tuesday, 1,406 people had disembarked from the ship.
A handful of people from the ship who have been treated in hospitals and released will be sent to hotels in several locations to spend their 14-day quarantine, while other Americans will be transported by air or bus to military bases in California, Texas and Georgia.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said about 100 people are treated and removed from the ship per hour, which represents a huge effort to keep workers safe and meet the needs of passengers. However, he said he wanted to see the process speed up so that the ship could leave Oakland within 72 hours.
He said legal counsel is studying the possibility of restricting cruise travel off the California coast while awaiting new federal directives on the cruise industry. In the meantime, he said that cruise ships should introduce aggressive requirements for travelers at the risk of the collapse of this industry.
When the landing started on Monday, two passengers were taken to the hospital with their traveling companions after a positive test on Friday. Meanwhile, 19 crew members who test positive but "found to be asymptomatic" remain on board the ship in isolated cabins, the company said in a statement released on Tuesday.
"Once the guest disembarkation is complete, the crew members will remain on board and Grand Princess will depart from San FranciscoBay. Plans for a quarantine crew are still being determined," said Princess.
DonnaLaGesse, a resident of North Carolina, said Tuesday that she did not know when she would be allowed to leave the ship. His traveling companion, sister-in-law Jackie Eilers of Colorado, knew little more. She received a luggage tag Tuesday afternoon, signaling that she would be leaving soon but was not informed of the date. Because LaGesse did not receive them, she feared that the two would be sent to separate quarantine facilities.
