What Wilmington Residents Should Know About The Latest COVID Variants
As the latest variants of the coronavirus spread rapidly around the world, it is important for local health officials to be careful, but said the latest strains are not necessarily a concern in the Cape Fear region.

Carla Turner, Assistant Health Director, New Hanover County, said:
BA.2 has been tracked in North Carolina, but it is unclear if it has reached the Wilmington area, health officials say. Omicron subvariants are now considered the predominant strain, accounting for more than half of the new cases in the United States over the past few days.
The first subvariant detected in January is expected to cause mild symptoms in most people who get it, USA Today reports. According to the World Health Organization, it is considered to be more contagious than the original strain of Omicron.
Vaccines are thought to prevent serious illnesses caused by BA.2, as in the case of Omicron BA.1. WHO also predicts that people infected during the recent surge in Omicron BA.1 will have high enough levels of innate immunity to be protected from new variants.
This happens when the country and communities around the world have removed the mask obligation and have begun to ease other health and safety measures. New Hanover County lifted its own mask obligations in November 2021, and the school district followed that decision in February.
According to Turner, the number of cases of COVID-19 in New Hanover County remains very low, and many safety obligations such as masking have been lifted. She encouraged residents to take responsibility in deciding how to protect themselves from the virus.
“What I tell people is to think about the most vulnerable people in their lives and do what they need to do to protect them,” she said.

According to Turner, anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms will need to stay home from work, school, or other activities until the COVID test results are returned. Those who test positive should contact their primary care provider to see what treatment options are available.
Residents over the age of 50 can now get a second booster shot through the county’s Pandemic Operations Center. Both Pfizer and Pfizer have recently been approved for a second booster dose. People who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or booster can receive a second booster from Moderna or Pfizer four months after the first booster dose.
The virus will not go away, Turner said, but health officials are learning more about the virus and how to treat and prevent it. Still, she added, residents should be aware of the virus and continue to provide information as it evolves.
“We need to learn how to live with it, but we need to learn how to live with it responsibly,” she said.
