‘Non-earthquake’ event sparked Quake Off SoCal report – NBC Los Angeles

The US Geological Survey said a “non-earthquake event” triggered a report of a 4.0-magnitude earthquake Friday morning off the coast of Southern California.

An earthquake report released before 10 a.m. indicated that the epicenter was in the ocean 18 miles southwest of Avalon on Catalina Island, according to the US Geological Survey. People have also reported shaking on the USGS Did You Feel It page.

The USGS later tweeted that the earthquake detection system was triggered by something else.

No details were immediately available about why the system was operating. Human activities, such as a mining and construction explosion, can sometimes create seismic waves large enough to be detected by the USGS National Seismic Network.
