Thousands gather for George Floyd funeral in Houston – BBC News
Thousands of people have gathered in Houston, Texas for the funeral of George Floyd, the African-American man whose death while being detained by police has caused outrage around the world.
Four police officers in Minneaoplis where Mr Floyd died have been sacked and charged over their involvement in his death.
The episode has exposed America’s racial divisions to the greatest degree since the 1960s. The nation’s politics, in a presidential election year, is equally polarised.
The Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said Mr Floyd’s death was “one of the great inflection points in American history”. President Trump has accused Mr Biden of wanting to help “robbers and rapists” by taking funds from the police.
The death of George Floyd and the violent behaviour of the Minneapolis police have led to a wave of demonstrations against racism across the UK, including the toppling of a statue of the slave-trader Edward Colston in Bristol. Attention has now turned to other public memorials including one to the imperialist Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College in Oxford.
