Equine flu kills 95 wild horses in five days at a Colorado facility
Las Vegas (KLAS) —The Land Management Department news release has accused the virus of killing 95 wild horses at a facility in Colorado since Saturday.
The horse died at a facility in Canon City, Colorado, in five days from April 23 to 25. A total of 2,184 horses are bred at the facility attached to the correction unit, about 115 miles south of Denver.
Laboratory tests have confirmed that the equine influenza virus, which is part of the development of respiratory illness, is likely to be the cause of death.
About 10% to 20% of horses in the facility are affected by milder influenza symptoms.
However, the group of horses that participated in the emergency Roundup in 2021 after the wildfire was more seriously affected. Those horses were part of the “West Douglas” summary.
Quarantine is in place and horses cannot leave until authorities determine that the animal is healthy, and there is no major threat to livestock in the area.
“The Land Management Department will review the operation of Canon City facilities to prevent such future outbreaks,” said Ben Gruber, Lieutenant Governor of BLM Colorado.
“This tragic result was influenced by a population of horses that could have been particularly vulnerable given their time spent in the West Douglas region and their exposure to last year’s wildfires that prompted an emergency rally. “It was,” said Gruber.
