Outbreaks of stomach bugs are currently affecting seven nurseries and one school in Hastings and Napier, leading to warnings from health authorities.
Earlier this week, the Hawke’s Bay Hospital ward was placed in a preventative blockade following the epidemic of norovirus, a bug of highly contagious vomiting and diarrhea. The ward was still closed as of Friday.
Hawke’s Bay health officials are now asking people to practice hand hygiene and stay home if they feel sick after more vomiting and diarrhea bugs have been reported in the community.
Dr. Nick Jones, Medical Officer of Hawksbay DHB, received four additional notifications about the outbreak of gastroenteritis in a nursery school and one school within the last 24 hours, and recently reported outbreaks. The total number of is 8.
“These outbreaks occur in the Hastings and Napier districts, including sudden vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, which usually last for 24 hours,” Jones said.
“Hand hygiene is very important to prevent the spread of bugs.
“You should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm running water for at least 20 seconds, and dry them thoroughly with a paper towel, especially after going to the bathroom, after changing diapers, and before handling food.
“Sick people should also stay away from work, school, sports and community activities and avoid preparing meals and swimming in public pools for 48 hours until diarrhea is gone.”
Jones said it was important to hydrate sick children and loved ones.
“Homes with vomiting and diarrhea need to continue hydration. If symptoms do not improve, it is very important to call your doctor or health line (0800 611 116) to see your doctor. . “
Cleaning household items is also very important to prevent the spread of insects, he said.
“Clean hard surfaces, toys, bathrooms and utensils as they can be contaminated with viruses. Wash dirty clothes with hot water and rinse them separately from the rest of the laundry.”
Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s ward remains closed due to strict infection, prevention, and control measures. Nine patients and eight staff were affected, but no new cases have been reported within the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, one more person died yesterday in Hawke’s Bay, resulting in 270 new Covid cases.
This brings the total number of deaths in the area to 19. There were also 13 people at Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
Nationally, there were 7800 new Covid-19 community cases and an additional 17 Covid-related deaths.
