Illinois currently may have nine children with hepatitis
Illinois health authorities have received reports of nine children with possible severe hepatitis — Up from 3 last month.
Children are one of about 180 cases nationwide in the last 7 months, under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the Illinois Public Health Department, five cases were reported in northern Illinois, two in western Illinois, one in central Illinois, and one in southern Illinois.
All children were hospitalized under the age of 10 and one needed a liver transplant. None of the children in Illinois died. The earliest case was January and the most recent case was May.
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that is often caused by heavy alcohol use, toxins, some medications, or the hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C viruses.
The cause of the child’s illness is unknown, but the case may be associated with adenovirus 41. Adenovirus 41 is a type of virus that usually includes diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and respiratory symptoms, but is not known to cause hepatitis. Otherwise healthy children. According to the State Health Department, two-thirds of children in Illinois tested positive for adenovirus. According to the CDC, nearly half of the cases under investigation nationwide have been tested as positive for adenovirus.
