Glasgow-based Dr Donna Keane, dubbed the “Hero Rat”, is working on this unique project with the non-profit organization APOPO.

In a strange twist, there have been reports of mice being trained to rescue people trapped during earthquakes. This comes as part of a unique scientific project. These mice will wear small backpacks containing microphones and location trackers so that rescuers can track their locations and talk to them as well. Rodents were trained to respond to the beeping sounds. Glasgow-based Dr Donna Keane, dubbed the “Hero Rat”, is working on this unique project with the non-profit organization APOPO. In order to be used in the fields, rodents will be sent to Turkey. Reporting to Indy100, Kane said, “The rats can get into small spaces to reach victims buried under the rubble. We’re not in a real situation yet, we have a mock wreck site. When we get the new backpacks we’ll be able to hear where we are from and where it is.” Rat, inside the wreckage. While talking about animals, she said that they can live on anything and are very good at surviving in careless environments. To date, seven rodents have been trained. It takes two weeks for them to be fully trained.
