Two cases of measles confirmed in preschool siblings in Minnesota
ST. Paul, Minnesota (FOX 9) ―――― Two cases of measles have been identified in preschool children who are siblings and live in Hennepin County. The Minnesota Department of Health and the Hennepin County Public Health Service are investigating cases of measles.
The two children developed symptoms shortly after measles returned from a general country visit. The children were not vaccinated and one was hospitalized due to measles complications.
MDH, Hennepin County Public Health Staff, Hospital and Clinic Staff are working to notify people who may have been exposed to children. MDH states that the risk to the general public for these cases is low. Exposure was limited to medical and family settings because the children were isolated when symptoms began.
If additional measles cases occur as a result of these cases, they can occur between now and July 1.
Measles symptoms
Early symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and teary eyes, after which the rash spreads from the head to the rest of the body. It usually takes 8-12 days after exposure to a person with measles until the first symptoms (usually fever) appear.
A measles rash usually appears 2-3 days after the onset of fever.
Measles can lead to hospitalization and death. Call your doctor or clinic if you have measles symptoms. You will be notified if you need to visit.
How to spread measles
Measles spreads easily by coughing, talking, or being in the same room as the person suffering from measles.
Measles vaccine
The child should be vaccinated twice with the MMR vaccine. The first is 12 to 15 months old and the second is 4 to 6 months old. If measles is traveling to a common country, children aged 6 to 12 months should receive an early dose of the MMR vaccine.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine protect about 99% of people from measles and rubella. However, in some Minnesota communities, MMR vaccination rates remain low.
MMR vaccination rates, and other childhood illnesses, COVID-19 Decreased during a pandemic.. Health officials are worried that some children may be more susceptible to vaccine-preventable illnesses than they were two years ago. Many are starting their trip again..
According to recent MDH data, the proportion of 2-year-olds who received at least one MMR vaccine by 24 months decreased from 81.4% in 2019 to 79.3% in 2021.
How to find vaccination records
MDH recommends that you check your records to make sure you and your child have been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. Minnesota can request vaccination records by visiting the following sites: https://www.health.state.mn.us/people/immunize/miic/records.html..
Minnesota Measles
