Earthquakes spoils Crishito’s upcoming Toronto party with a goal in overtime

After a week of seismic activity at the front office of Toronto FC, the San Jose Earthquakes dashed the Reds’ hopes of a much-needed victory on Saturday night.

TFC reclaimed a 1-0 deficit with two superb goals late in the second half – by GTA boys Deandre Kerr and Jonathan Osorio – to take a 2-1 lead.
But in injury time, San Jose midfielder Jack Scahan tied 2-2 when he scored after a gift from Toronto’s Ivunanishi Achara. Just before that goal, TFC goalkeeper Quentin Westberg managed to make a great save to Jeremy Ibobisi who looked like he would keep the win.

The draw was a heartbreaking result for the Reds, who controlled most of the match. TFC desperately needs to start winning as the club sits six points off the breakout point in the MLS Eastern Conference with 15 games remaining and five teams to jump. The chances of all five of these teams going into a coma in the second half of the season are highly unlikely. On top of everything else, four of TFC’s next five MLS games are on the way.

It’s just a game you have to win,” said TFC coach Bob Bradley. “When you get a good response, when you get some goals, when you have a chance now at the end to finish the game, take your points, reward yourselves… (But) we let the three points slip away.”

Saturday’s match saw the opening appearance of left-back Domenico Criscito in TFC uniform. Criscito joined the Reds from Genoa after the end of the Serie A season and showed quality and creativity on the left side, although the 35-year-old was tired towards the end of the game and suffered a contracture in his right hamstring before being substituted in the 80th minute. “My last game in Europe was in May. I’ve been training last month and I’ve been training with (TFC) only three or four times, so, with the coach, we were thinking about playing the first half and maybe a little bit more,” Criscito said of his team. Lorenzo Insigne, Italy’s national teammate Lorenzo Insigne, who has a calf injury and will not be ready to play in a game until at least July 23, when they host Charlotte, did not play on Saturday. TFC acquired veteran MLS midfielder and Canadian international Marc Anthony Kay on Friday in exchange for 19-year-old midfielder Ralph Brisseau, a spot on the 2023 International Players List and the 2023 normal round of the SuperDraft Championship and Public Funds Choice (GAM) . Kai wasn’t in the starting line-up against San Jose, but he should be ready for Toronto’s upcoming game Wednesday night in Chicago.
Earlier in the week, the Reds replaced star attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo (2020 NBA Player of the Year) with Inter Miami for $150,000 in the Greater Amman Municipality. TFC is trying to acquire former Juventus winger/attacking midfielder Federico Bernardeschi now that the 28-year-old’s contract with the club has expired.
After Ebobisse’s first goal in the first half, Ajax native Kerr tied the match in the 71st minute when he got a superb pass from Osorio down midfield, advanced down the field, cut to his left ahead of a defender and then sent with his left foot an explosion into the net. Lower left corner to score his third goal of the season. Osorio scored the sixth assist in his team’s goal. Four minutes later, Kerr played a promising goal with Brampton native Osorio, who scored from a sweet left touch into the corner, his fifth of the year.

Ebobisse’s goal came from a TFC giveaway by Chris Mavinga and finished with Benji Kikanovic putting Ebobisse in a perfect pass into the penalty area. Then the French striker buried it in the lower left corner. Before this goal, Mavinga, who suffered this season, played with great confidence.
With the second half over, TFC had two great chances to score in one game, starting with Kerr making a superb move in the penalty area to getting a left-footed shot wide and then blocking Osorio’s rebound. In a subsequent corner kick by Criscito, Kerr headed the ball off the crossbar.
Osorio came close in the 55th minute when he received a superb pass from Kerr, danced around two San Jose defenders and directed the ball with his right foot towards the right side of the goal with Earthquakes goalkeeper James Marcinkowski. Nice arm keeping.
Iyo Akinola was stopped by Marcinkowski from close range late in the game after being sent towards goal alone.
