‘We thought it was an earthquake’: 3 killed in massive backlog in Rialto

Three people were killed and several others injured in an eight-car crash at a busy intersection in Rialto Monday evening.

The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Riverside Boulevard and Valley Boulevard.

According to the Rialto Police Department, three people died at the scene and two others were taken to local hospitals with moderate injuries.

Investigators believe the Jeep Cherokee driver was traveling at high speed when he crashed into the back of two vehicles near the intersection. Police said the vehicles collided with several other vehicles and at least two caught fire.

It is believed that the driver of the jeep was one of the dead in the accident. Witnesses told police that the car was traveling at between 80 and 100 miles per hour.

Isabel Copian works in a nearby restaurant. She said everything shook when the accident happened.

“We thought it was an earthquake, like a huge explosion,” Kobian told KTLA.

Cobian said one of the restaurant customers seated in her section was a former law enforcement officer who jumped into work to try to help.

“He went out to see what happened,” Cobian said. “He said he tried to save a woman and a little girl but it was too late.”

The woman and the young girl were identified Tuesday as 33-year-old Ashley Gilroy and 8-year-old Marley Maldonado from Highland. The two were traveling in a Kia when the accident occurred. Their dog was in the car at the time of the accident and also died.

Capt. Anthony Vega of the Rialto Police Department said a man tried to report the disappearance of his wife and daughter before he learned they were victims in the horrific accident.

“Father is going through the worst time of his life,” Vega said. “Husband, father lost everything that was important to him in that car.”

Vega added that the officers did everything they could to try to save the little girl and her mother from the wreckage, but they were unsuccessful.

A video from Sky5 showed the scale of the collision at the intersection with some vehicles being almost unrecognizable given the extent of the damage.

Traffic investigators were on site during part of Tuesday morning.

Police believe the driver may have been driving under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred.
