HIV infections rise in SF for first time in 10 years, likely due to pandemic
San Francisco recorded its first year-over-year increase in new HIV infections in 2021 for the first time in nearly a decade, but at least some of those cases are expected to become infected in 2020, due to pandemic lockdowns and other reasons. may be people who tested positive only in the last year. Limitation that led to testing delays.
According to the city’s announcement Annual HIV/AIDS Report Released Tuesday, 160 people were diagnosed with HIV in San Francisco last year, up 16% from 2020, when 138 new cases were recorded, and the first increase since 2012. When 173 cases were reported before the COVID pandemic wreaked havoc on access to testing and treatment.
Health officials were unable to determine how many new infections reported last year actually occurred in 2020, but were only confirmed in 2021 due to delays in testing. HIV tests dropped about 45% across San Francisco in the first year of the pandemic.
Report description how the pandemicin the second year, continued to influence San Francisco’s decade-long effort, known as “Getting to Zero,” is to eradicate HIV infection in the city. Nearly every HIV marker in the city worsened in 2021 compared to the previous year or his pre-COVID year.
“We have yet to see a full recovery from COVID,” said Dr. Susan Buchbinder, co-chair of the city’s Getting to Zero Steering Committee. “This report highlights how much work we need to do to get where we want to go.”
Buchbinder added that while San Francisco has seen an overall increase in testing over the last year, surpassing 2019 levels in some locations, there are still some parts of the community that aren’t as tested as they should be. So 2021, like the previous year, may have again underestimated the number of new infections, she said.
She was also concerned about the virus’ suppression rate. This is an important marker for HIV that indicates how well the virus is controlled in an individual. Antiretroviral therapy can keep a person’s viral load so low that it can go undetected and infect others.
In the first nine months of 2021, 75% of people living with HIV were virally suppressed within six months of diagnosis. During the same period in 2019, 79% of people were virally suppressed within her six months. While not a drastic decline, the rate rose steadily before the pandemic, suggesting that some foothold has been lost in bringing newly diagnosed people to treatment, Health said. the authorities said.
“I don’t think it’s surprising that HIV testing and care has been disrupted across the board,” said Vince Crisostomo, director of aging services at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Pandemic interrupted access to care, especially for those already struggling with homelessness and drug use. “In fact, I think the report could have been worse, and I am grateful for that.”
The report also noted that HIV health equity will deteriorate in 2021, especially among homeless people, who accounted for a quarter of all new infections last year.
Additionally, the rate of new infections among black and Latino men in 2021 will be nearly three times higher than among white men, continuing a long-standing trend of HIV. Blacks and Asians were also less likely than whites to have the virus suppressed after 6 months, about 65% of blacks and Asians compared with 73% of him in whites.
This report analyzed some data through 2021 and data through 2020. According to reports, deaths among people living with HIV increased in 2020. This is the most recent year for which statistics are available and is on the rise for most demographics. In 2020, 286 deaths were reported. An increase from 263 in the previous year.
Nearly three-quarters of deaths in 2020 were not from HIV-related causes, and the annual increase may partly reflect the aging population of HIV-infected people in San Francisco.
But health officials said they were concerned about rising mortality rates among certain population groups, particularly black men and transgender women. A similar trend was observed across the board. It accounted for 11% of deaths among people living with HIV from 2009-2012 and 15% of deaths from 2017-2020.
