Four new monkeypox cases reported in New Zealand

Four more cases of monkeypox have been found in New Zealand, according to the Ministry of Health.

A total of 9 people have been infected in the country.

The latest cases were all reported in the past seven days and all had recently returned from abroad, the ministry said.

Three people are in quarantine in the Auckland area and one in the South Island.

Public health staff have assessed the risk of transmission from the case as low, and there is currently no evidence of community transmission, according to the Ministry of Health.

Updates on monkeypox cases are provided weekly rather than individually.

Advice has been provided to public health departments, primary care providers and sexual health clinics to help identify potential cases, the ministry said.

“We continue to advise people who have physical or sexual contact abroad, or who have recently traveled abroad, to be aware of MPX symptoms and health advice.”

According to the World Health Organization’s September 21, 2022 report, the number of globally reported monkeypox cases peaked in mid-August, with cases declining in Europe and the Americas.

How common are outbreaks?

The virus was first identified in captive monkeys, and sporadic outbreaks have been reported in 10 African countries since 1970.

An outbreak occurred in the United States in 2003, the first outside of Africa. The patient contracted the disease through close contact with prairie dogs infected by small mammals imported into the country. A total of 81 cases were reported, with no deaths.

In 2017, Nigeria experienced the largest known outbreak. He had 172 suspected cases and 7% of the victims he was male between the ages of 21 and 40.

Early symptoms include fever, headache, swelling, back pain, and muscle aches.
