Paduka — With flu season at its peak, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and COVID-19 are becoming very common in our area.
“It shouldn’t be underestimated because people are thinking about whether or not they want to get the flu vaccine. So we’re seeing a very large increase in the number of people being diagnosed with the flu. It represents about 30% of people who are actually diagnosed with the flu when they are taken to a hospital or emergency room with serious symptoms,” said Brad Howsman, Ph.D., chief medical officer at Baptist Health Paducah.
Influenza is at the forefront of this season’s three viruses. Both RSV and influenza diagnoses are found in people under the age of 20. Hospitalizations for RSV affect children under the age of 12.
“People under the age of 20 have the highest percentage of people who test positive for flu, and they make up the majority, probably at least 50 percent,” said Purchase District Health Director Kent Koster. .
Although COVID-19 has not seen the surge of RSV or influenza, it is still prevalent.
As temperatures cool, the number of cases of all three diseases is expected to increase.
