The Robert B. Historic Green is not safe after the earthquake damage

SAN ANTONIO – Structural engineers have deemed the historic Robert B. Greene Building in downtown San Antonio unsafe after damage from the earthquake.

According to university health officials, the building on West Martin’s 900 block has been closed and a safety zone has been established around it until further notice.

According to San Antonio police, tremors were felt by residents of tall buildings near the city center from what was determined to be a 5.7-magnitude earthquake in West Texas.

The USGS website showed the quake occurred about 24 miles northwest of Menton, Texas at 3:32 p.m. CST, which is about 350 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The vast majority of the historic building’s clinical services were moved in 2013 to the newer Robert B. Greene Clinic Building, which appears to have been unaffected by the earthquake. However, engineers are checking all buildings on campus, university health officials said. The administrative services that remained in the historic building have been moved to other office spaces in the city.

Many San Antonio residents received care there during the 1918 influenza pandemic, and many were treated there during the polio epidemics of the 1940s and 1950s that shut down San Antonio’s schools.
