Living with Type 1 Diabetes Does Not Eliminate Gratitude
Our family joined the worldwide diabetes community in 2019 when The Architect, then 6 years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She’s currently the only Type 1 kid in her elementary school, but we’re so grateful for the experience and support we’re getting from our vast virtual community and a few friends nearby. .
November is Diabetes Awareness Month (besides Thanksgiving, insert your best sneaky food comment here, I can take it), I am using this space to , I like to bring a little awareness to the cause. Not just for my daughter, but because nearly 2 million Americans suffer from this largely misunderstood autoimmune disease.
I posted a version of the following words on social media on World Diabetes Day (November 14th), but I’m sharing it here as well in hopes of reaching a wider audience.
Three years after Type 1, where are we standing?
If you have time to talk to a family member struggling with a new diabetes diagnosis, say: This is not always the case. You learn, you grow, there are some bumps along the way, but you dust yourself off and get over them. ”
So now you don’t have to worry that a single dose of insulin will kill her (which it can, but it could mean getting on a plane or eating the wrong sushi). I’ll double check, rely a little on technology, and fix if necessary. Overall, I am grateful for this artificial hormone that keeps my daughter and many others alive.
So there it is.
On the flip side, I still struggle with some forms of denial, such as my dislike of seeing diabetic accessories on the architect’s nightstand. If you have anything you use to soften the glue on your pills or insulin pods, move them to the lower basket. It looks like a diabetic is sleeping here.
I know it sounds weird and loud.I think it’s a bit of a battle with reality. It certainly makes sense that the glucose pills are on the nightstand because inevitably her low alarm went off at 1am and one of us was stumbling down the hallway to her room in the dark. , because it has to be tucked between her teeth. She chews it in her sleep. Because this is our normal life now.
But normal kids don’t have glucose pills by their bed, so I want her to be a normal kid.
Is there such a thing as a normal child?
Someone on the diabetes page I follow recently posted a news story about a type 1 child who went on an extended field trip to another country and died of diabetes complications due to a series of miscommunications. I don’t know why you read the article. It’s like watching a horror movie in slow motion, and someone about to be attacked by a knife-wielding psychopath looks just like someone you love. Now this teen will never grow up, his family is embroiled in lawsuits and they don’t want his daughter out of the house again.
But the thing about diabetes, which I think other medical people can relate to, is that you can’t live there. You have to turn it off and live your life.
Scary things happen to people with diabetes every day. It can also occur in “normal” healthy people. What should I live in fear of? can As it happens, we miss the beauty that unfolds before us so much that we can waste our lives that way.
So our child is not normal. Come to think of it, it doesn’t belong to anyone. Despite this diagnosis, I am grateful that Architect is thriving and able to do a myriad of different things.
We fearlessly choose to be grateful every day because being grateful is a better way to deal with a diagnosis like this.
This Thanksgiving, Diabetes Awareness Month, we are giving thanks to insulin. For the families and communities that love and support us. To the doctors who take care of you. Technology is always improving little by little to help us manage.
As this journey has shown us, we are grateful for life because it should never be taken for granted.
