Montana woman shares her battle with colon cancer
Missoula – in March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Then, we heard the story of a local woman’s journey with colon cancer.
Sherry Cowan noticed changes in her body on Super Bowl Sunday in 2012 and went to the doctor’s office to get a colonoscopy. When she was 38, Shelly was diagnosed with colon cancer. A nursing student at the time, Shelly received a phone call that she will never forget.
“I was in my second month of nursing school and I remember one Wednesday when I was in the lab. I got a phone call and his words were, ‘You have a little cancer.’ I’m not sure what a little bit of cancer means, but that was the beginning of the process of where we’re going from here.
Different types of cancer can be more aggressive, but for Shelly, a colon cancer diagnosis meant prompt surgery.
“My cancer sigmoid colonAnatomically, it was the last part of the colon, a mushroom-like mass,” Sherry recalls. “It was already starting to open up and spread out. My surgeon at the time said I needed to get this out immediately. She said, “No, this is advanced cancer and if we wait to find out it will be too late.”
But even more devastating news came to the family when Sherry recovered from surgery.
“I came home from the hospital and a week later my youngest was diagnosed with a brain tumor,” Shelly said. Since he was in Seattle, he was in charge of his nursing school, diagnosing his own children, and diagnosing his own cancer, so my treatment was put on the back burner. ”
There’s also good news — Shelly’s son’s tumor was noncancerous and was removed. .
“Dr. Nicholas sat me down and said, ‘I know where you are and the situation we are facing.’ “Then the team sat down and went through mine slide by slide to make sure my cancer hadn’t left the lymphatic system,” Shelley said. I was certain I wouldn’t, and I didn’t need chemotherapy, so I stopped planning at that point.”
Sherry was told that no more illness was detected.
“To be told you are cancer-free is both thrilling and terrifying. “And because that word is associated with you, it makes you a little more argumentative and paranoid whenever something happens. .
Sherry shared with us the importance of listening to your body and making an appointment and getting checked if you feel something isn’t right.
“Don’t be afraid or proud, just keep it to yourself. Don’t be afraid to have that conversation with your doctor. They’ve heard it all. They’ve seen it all, And they’re not going to make you think any differently by bringing up something that might embarrass you. I think it might.”
