Some brain changes associated with obesity resemble those of Alzheimer’s disease
A new analysis suggests that some of the brain changes in obese people resemble those that occur in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
This study was published online on January 31, 2023. Alzheimer’s JournalThe researchers examined more than 1,300 brain scans, including 341 with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, and obesity, and 682 with neither condition. In people with either Alzheimer’s disease or obesity, scans revealed similar thinning in areas of the brain responsible for learning, memory and judgment. Cognitive tests taken by obese participants, defined as those with a BMI of 30 or higher, did not reveal any obvious mental deficits, but the researchers found that these tests showed changes in thinking ability associated with brain changes. He noted that small changes may not be detectable.
