Only 4 confirmed cases of influenza in ACT this season due to coronavirus

Canberra has been able to skip this year’s flu season altogether, with only 4 confirmed cases of influenza in the last 3 months and 0 inpatients.

Measures taken to prevent the epidemic of COVID-19 and improved vaccination coverage leveled what was predicted to be another bad flu season.

The flu season usually begins in late March and peaks in August. At this point last year, Canberra had over 2,000 confirmed cases of influenza.

By the end of last year’s flu season, there were about 4,000 confirmed cases.

To date, there have been 189 cases of influenza confirmed in Canberra in 2020, almost all of which were documented in the first two months of the year.

“The ACT’s influenza activity is currently only four reported in the last 12 weeks (by 12 July), the lowest level ever,” said a Canberra Health Services spokeswoman.

“This probably reflects, in part, vaccination rates, as well as physical distance and good hygiene associated with the COVID-19 response.”

Influenza vaccine ingestion by public programs almost doubled

Within 4 weeks of the availability of the influenza vaccine in Canberra, 105,000 vaccinations were given through the National Immunization Program. This is 45,000 more times than the previous year.

Canberra Health Services said demand for vaccines also seems to be growing in the private market.

Antonio Didio, ACT Chairman of the Australian Medical Association, said the federal extended vaccine program saved lives.

“One of the big positives is that there are far fewer flu deaths…in Australia there are 3,000 flu deaths each year,” Didio said.

Possibility of influenza outbreak next month

But Didio warned that the number of flu cases could surge from next month.

“Everyone went early this year thanks to COVID and everyone got the flu in April,” he said.
