An 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits off the coast of Alaska
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska, in the south of the Aleutan Islands, on Tuesday evening (21 July) local time, raising fears of a tsunami.
The earthquake struck 10:12 pm local time (2:12 am ET on July 22, or 06:12 UTC) just 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Perryville, Alaska, and 528 miles southwest of Anchorage. The tsunami warning issued in southern Alaska, Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutia Islands was subsequently canceled.

Vibration occurred when a mass of Earth’s crust slipped on the sea floor on top of another, in a process called cracking thrust. In this case, a slip occurred on or near the subduction zone where the Pacific plate slowly sinks beneath (or transforms) the tectonic plate in North America, according to the US Geological Survey. The US Geological Survey said that pessimistic events similar to the Alaska earthquake today usually occur in an area 75 miles long and 31 miles wide (120 x 50 km).
The entire region is called the Alaskan Alaskan subduction zone, where earthquakes are relatively common. Since 1900, another six earthquakes have struck at least 7 with a magnitude of 155 miles (250 km) from today’s event. The U.S. Geological Survey said the largest, an 8.2-magnitude earthquake, struck on November 10, 1938, at roughly the same location as today’s earthquake. The second largest earthquake recorded with modern seismic instruments occurred in the subduction zone (but far from today’s earthquake), causing a 9.2 magnitude earthquake on March 27, 1964; The US Geological Survey said this earthquake produced small tsunamis, but its remote location means that there has been little impact on people or infrastructure in the area.
Today’s earthquake is shallow at a depth of about 17 miles (28 km). “Anything less than 70 km is considered a shallow earthquake,” said Alison Chinchar, a meteorologist at CNN earlier. “This is important, because shallow earthquakes often cause the most damage, compared to deeper earthquakes, regardless of their strength.”
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7.6 that are also shallow and caused by propulsion failure are more likely than other types of earthquakes to trigger a tsunami. Today’s earthquake will be considered a shallow earthquake, with the rupture occurring with a depth of about 6 miles (10 km).

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
