While the number of infected people is increasing nationwide, there are only three measles cases in Washington state.

SEATTLE — Just as the number of spring break travelers increases in early April, measles cases in the United States are surging at an alarming rate.

97 measles cases have been confirmed so far this year nationwide, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That compares to a total of 58 confirmed cases in 2023, according to the CDC.

HealthLink looked at the number of measles cases in the country. Washington The current state in 2024. According to the Washington Department of Health (DOH), there have been three confirmed measles cases as of early April. All three cases are confined to Spokane County.
“Even one case is concerning,” said Dr. Jamilia Schalls.

Mr. Charles, who serves as the director, Vaccination room The DOH said that while the number of measles cases in Washington State as a whole appears to be low compared to other states, one case is too many.

“Measles itself is a highly contagious disease,” Schalls said.

Measles is a virus that was thought to be eliminated in the United States. the year of 2000But in recent years, the incident has resurfaced.

Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and rash. Severe complications, such as brain swelling and pneumonia, can lead to hospitalization, especially in children.
“So this is very concerning to us because we don't want to see an epidemic or an outbreak of this disease because it can often cause serious injuries and death. Because there isn’t,” Schalls said.

DOH officials said all three people who contracted measles in Washington this year had not been vaccinated. One is a minor under the age of 18 and the other two are adults.

For comparison, there were a total of 11 confirmed cases of measles reported in Washington State in 2023, according to the DOH.

“The number of measles cases is currently increasing across the country, further highlighting the importance of vaccination,” Schalls said.

Among recent measles cases, data compiled by the DOH indicates that measles outbreaks are few. decline Changes in state-wide child immunization rates in recent years.

For children under 12 years of age, routine childhood immunizations, including measles vaccines, have been on the decline from 2019 to 2022.
“The biggest decline in vaccination coverage was in the age group 19-35 months. Specifically, at the end of 2021, 57% of this age group had received all routine immunizations, compared to 2019. In 2017, it was about 67%,” Schalls said.

Schalls said public health will pay close attention to any decrease, no matter how small.

“We take this seriously, and we take the drop in childhood vaccination rates to be a serious event. This is important to us,” Schalls said.

The reasons for the slight decline are manifold. Schalls said pandemic-related disruptions to health services have made it even more difficult for families to get regular health checkups.

Schalls also pointed to vaccine misinformation and vaccine “fatigue” that has arisen at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Schalls said childhood vaccination rates are now more stable and showing signs of improvement.
“Overall, the reality is that the vast majority of parents are still choosing to vaccinate their children, which is gratifying,” Schalls said.

Adults who received a measles booster shot in childhood usually don't need to be vaccinated again for measles, but should talk to their doctor if they have concerns about their immunity, Schalls said.
