West Virginia measles patient had traveled overseas
MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – The first measles case reported in West Virginia in 15 years was in an undervaccinated person who had recently traveled abroad.

The West Virginia Department of Health made the announcement Monday. Officials said they are working closely with the Monongalia County Health Department to conduct contact tracing.
According to WVDOH, “Measles is a highly contagious and serious respiratory disease that can cause complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. If an infected person coughs or sneezes, It then spreads through the air. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus is so contagious that if one person is infected, it can infect up to 90 of their close contacts if they are not protected by vaccination. % will become infected.”
The agency said measles begins with a fever, followed by a cough, runny nose and red rash. A rash of small red spots tends to appear around the head before spreading to other parts of the body.
Measles is on the rise, with 125 cases reported in 18 states so far this year, according to WVDOH.
Health officials said vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles infection.
