Increased seismicity under the caldera area

(BIVN) – Kilauea volcano is not erupting, although another wave of growing unrest appears to have started overnight and continued into Friday evening.

The USGS volcano alert level remains at advisory level, and most of the high seismic activity occurs beneath the southern caldera.

“Last night, there was a wave of earthquakes beneath the southern caldera,” the scientists wrote in an update on Friday, though as of 7:45 a.m. they noted that “things have stabilized for now.”

Since this update, seismic activity has increased again in the same southern caldera area.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory also reported:

Ground deformation continues beneath the Halema'umau and southern caldera zones. The clinometer at Oikahuna northwest of the summit has shown a generally slight inflationary trend over the past day. Meanwhile, the Sand Hill tilt gauge southwest of the summit showed a west-northwest magnification tendency in the southern caldera area.

USGS HVO also provided this analysis:

Magma is pressurizing the system beneath Halema'umau and the southern caldera area, activating seismic activity along faults in the upper East Rift Zone. At present, it cannot be said whether this increase in activity will lead to infiltration or eruption in the near future, or will simply continue as seismic disturbances at depth. Changes in the nature and location of disturbances can occur quickly, as can the potential for an eruption.

There are no closures reported within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park due to current activity.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says it will provide daily updates while Kīlauea Volcano is in a state of intense unrest.
