An earthquake in northeastern Iran kills four and injures 120

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Iran on Tuesday, killing four people and injuring 120 others, officials said. The earthquake struck the town of Kashmar, located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of the capital, Tehran.

Iranian state television reported the tremor and highlighted the rapid response by rescue teams. The Red Crescent established three temporary camps to help those affected by the disaster.

Iran lies on large seismic faults and experiences an average of one earthquake per day. The country's history is marred by many devastating earthquakes. In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. More recently, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2017 struck western Iran, killing more than 600 people and injuring more than 9,000 others.

The recent earthquake also affected neighboring countries, with reports of tremors being felt in Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
