Lowcountry group promotes care on National HIV Testing Day
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Thursday is National HIV Testing Day and Lowcountry organizations are working to spread awareness and resources to the community.
Palmetto Community Care is a nonprofit AIDS service organization encouraging South Carolinians to get tested, and Director of Development and Marketing Richard Reames says everyone should get tested at least once in their life, regardless of their situation or lifestyle.
As of 2021, there are more than 1 million people living with HIV in the United States. Anyone can become infected with this sexually transmitted disease, and the number of new infections is on the rise, according to the Department of Health Services. The reluctance of many people to seek treatment stems from several issues, including the financial impact of adequate medical insurance, proximity to nearby medical centers, and the long-standing stigma surrounding the disease. Stigma makes people hesitant to learn about their condition for fear of being judged or embarrassed to seek treatment.
This nonprofit service organization is offering free, confidential testing at its Rivers Avenue facility and mobile testing van in conjunction with National HIV Testing Day. The care facility is offering incentives, such as a $25 gift card, to get your status checked. The mobile testing van will be conducting tests at the Walmart on Rivers Avenue from 10am to 4pm and at the facility from 8:30am to 6:30pm.
“This issue isn't being talked about as much as it should be,” Reames said, “which is why we encourage everyone to get tested and talk about their risk factors.”
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control also offers free HIV and STI testing at locations across the state. To schedule a test, call 1-855-472-3432.
Anyone can get tested, starting at age 13. Reams says knowing whether you have a positive or negative disease status is important to understanding how to live the healthiest life possible.
“It's not like getting a positive diagnosis in the '80s or '90s,” Reames says. “There are a lot of support services and medical advances that can help people survive and live full, normal, healthy lives, but if you don't know your status, you don't know your options.”
The organization will be conducting free testing at Mount Moriah Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 29. It will also be conducting free testing every week for walk-ins or no appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and free testing on Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
