Edina girls flag football team advances to NFL championships
The Edina Girls Athletic Association flag football team ran on the same field as the Vikings on Friday morning.
At the TCO Performance Center in Eagan, the eight-girl team was given a going-away party. The team toured the facility and had a brief chat with Vikings first-round draft pick JJ McCarthy before heading to the NFL Flag Championships at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, from July 18-21.
The U18 Edina team competes in a community athletic association, not a school system. The team will face opponents representing 31 other NFL teams. Teams will be from the 11 states that allow girls flag football at the high school level. Minnesota is not one of them.
“It's going to be fun to play because it's going to be really competitive,” said Edina rising senior Lyric Busby. “It's more girls that are really dedicated to the sport and they literally have varsity and JV teams for this, even some states.”
For flag football to be considered an emerging sport by MSHSL, 20 schools must compete interscholastically for two years, said Emily Weinberg, Vikings youth and high school football coordinator. The Vikings partner with eight school districts to support girls' flag football at the high school level and lead the Minnesota Girls Flag Initiative Committee.
“I really hope that showing their journey to the NFL Flag Championships will inspire other programs across the state to start Girls Flag as well,” Weinberg said.
On Sunday, the Vikings will also host four of the current high school programs competing in Pine Island, Rosemount, La Crescent-Hokah and Houston as they battle for the first state flag football high school title. The championship game kicks off at 11 a.m. at TCO Stadium.
The lack of widespread school-sanctioned flag football doesn’t mean the Edina girls haven’t found a way to play. The EGAA, founded in 1975, offers 7-on-7 fall flag football for girls in grades 4 through 12. Coach Trevor Busby, Lyric’s father, has been refereeing games for 15 years and estimates that 80 teams play each fall, with eight high school-age teams competing.
Many of the girls who went to Canton with Busby and coach Deitan Dubuc started playing flag football in late elementary school and combined it with other sports. Lyric will play lacrosse at the University of Cincinnati. Kaylee Idrogo-Lam, a rising senior, will combine flag football with soccer, field hockey and lacrosse.
“A big reason I was able to start flag football was because the girls’ sports community at Edina is so tight-knit,” said Idrogo-Lam, who was recently elected as an EGAA student council member. “Everyone wants to work together and give us these opportunities.”
The NFL Flag Championships were previously incorporated into the Pro Bowl festivities in February, but this year will be its own event for the first time, with more than 280 girls and boys teams competing. The St. Paul-based U15 boys team JSizzles will also represent the Vikings. Most of the teams qualified through regional tournaments, but with the tournament moving from February to July, timing dictated that the Vikings select the Edina girls as their representative.
“It happened pretty quickly,” Trevor Busby said about a month ago, when girls who had played with and against each other through EGAA were brought together.
“Given their long history with girl flags,” Weinberg said, “we thought this would be a great opportunity for them to showcase all the work they've done over the years.”
