Trump's hardline immigration policies take center stage on second day of Republican National Convention | Donald Trump News
Republicans are rallying around the former president's platform at the national convention in Milwaukee, days after the shooting at a rally.
Donald Trump's hardline stance on immigration will be in the spotlight on the second day of the Republican National Convention (RNC), after the former US president made his first public appearance since surviving an assassination attempt over the weekend.
Republicans are expected to take on their Democratic rivals on Tuesday at the RNC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the theme of the day is “Making America Safe Again.”
The GOP has rallied behind the former president's tough immigration policies, which have been a central part of Trump's political brand as well as his 2024 election campaign.
Republicans have also used immigration, a top concern for American voters, to criticize US President Joe Biden ahead of the November election, which is expected to be a close race between Biden and Trump.
They have accused the Democratic president of not doing enough to stem the flow of asylum seekers crossing the country's southern border with Mexico, and the GOP platform calls for sealing the border and carrying out the largest deportation operation in American history.
In an interview with FOX News on Monday, JD Vance, who had been selected hours earlier as Trump's running mate, said we need to deport undocumented immigrants in the United States.
“We need to remove people who have broken our laws, who have come here. And I think we need to start with violent criminals,” Vance said.
Republicans have also sought to link immigration to crime, promising in their party platform that they would end a so-called epidemic of migrant-related crime.
Once iconic American cities and communities have been hollowed out and dystopian nightmares have been conjured by Joe Biden and the Democrats, who have reawakened soft-crime and open-border policies, the Republican National Committee said in unveiling its convention agenda last week.
However, violent crime has declined in the United States in recent years.
Research conducted last year at Stanford University in California also showed that immigrants are 30 percent less likely to be incarcerated than white people born in the United States, and 60 percent less likely to be imprisoned than the general U.S.-born population.
“From Henry Cabot Lodge in the late 19th century to Donald Trump, anti-immigration politicians have repeatedly tried to link immigrants to crime, but our research confirms that this is a myth and not based on fact,” said Stanford professor Ran Abramitzky, author of the study.
Migrant rights advocates have also criticized the GOP for promoting anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Yet Trump and Republicans hope their radical policies will appeal to voters as the November presidential election approaches.
Some of the president's former Republican rivals, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former United Nations envoy Nikki Haley, both of whom challenged Trump for the 2024 nomination, will deliver speeches at the RNC on Tuesday night, US media reported.
Haley's remarks will be aimed at appealing to Americans who are unsure whether to vote for Trump and explaining why she is voting for him, NBC News reported, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.
Trump, who was officially confirmed Monday as the Republican presidential nominee and received a hero's welcome at the convention, will also address the convention at its closing night on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Biden continues to face questions about the viability of his re-election campaign after several Democrats called on him to drop out of the race following a confusing and disturbing performance in last month's debate.
Speaking to NBC News on Monday evening, the US president reiterated his intention to stay in office to challenge Trump in November.
Biden is scheduled to address the national conference of the NAACP, one of the nation's largest black civil rights organizations, in Nevada on Tuesday afternoon.
