General Atomics Begins Irradiation Tests on Nuclear Fuel Cladding Technology

SAN DIEGO – July 16, 2024 – General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) today announced that it has achieved a major milestone in the company’s SiGA® cladding technology, manufacturing the first batch of full-length silicon carbide composite tubes designed for pressurized water reactors (PWRs). GA-EMS has signed a contract with the Department of Energy (DOE) to advance silicon carbide fuel cladding technology to improve the efficiency and safety of the U.S. nuclear reactor fleet.

“This demonstration of manufacturing SiGA coatings in 12-foot lengths is an important milestone in our efforts to bring this innovative technology to market,” said Scott Forney, President of GA-EMS. “We have implemented a strategic manufacturing and testing program and have improved manufacturing efficiency and scale-up of this enabling product, including demonstrating coating robustness through collaborative test campaigns with national laboratories.”

SiGA is a silicon carbide (SiC) composite material that forms the basis for the development of fuel rods for nuclear reactors capable of surviving temperatures much higher than those of current materials.

“SiGA coating is designed to improve the safety and accessibility of the existing nuclear reactor fleet,” said Dr. Christina Back, vice president of GA-EMS Nuclear Technologies and Materials. “The stability of the material in the core can reduce the frequency of core refueling, which will improve the economics of the nuclear power plant, while providing additional protection of the fuel in the unlikely event of an accident. This manufacturing step demonstrated excellent property consistency across the entire length of the part and throughout the production batch. As we continue to validate our scale-up work, these key performance metrics demonstrated in shorter lengths of 6 inches to 3 feet will continue to be the hallmark of SiGA technology across the entire length.”

In addition to scaling manufacturing techniques and improving processes, GA-EMS focuses on advanced performance testing and modeling tool development for SiGA® fuel rods.
