Kimberly Cheatle resigns following pressure after assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The head of the US Secret Service has resigned over the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, following days of mounting pressure and criticism for failing to prevent the shooting.

Kimberly Cheatle sent an email to staff Tuesday announcing her intention to resign, the Associated Press reported.

She had come under pressure from U.S. lawmakers to resign as questions continue to swirl around security protocols at Trump's July 13 rally in Pennsylvania, where the former president and Republican presidential nominee was shot in the ear.

“I take full responsibility for this security breach,” Cheatle said in the email to staff. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to resign as director.”

US President Joe Biden thanked the Secret Service director for her decades of public service and said he plans to name her replacement soon.

The independent investigation into what happened on July 13 continues, and I look forward to evaluating its findings. We all know that what happened that day can never happen again, Biden said in a statement.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also said later in the day that he had named Ronald L. Rowe, the deputy director of the Secret Service, to serve as acting director following Cheatles' resignation.

Cheatle faced tough questions during a hearing before a congressional committee on Monday over the agency's security plan for the Trump rally.

The former president was shot in the ear by a gunman who, witnesses said, had taken up position on a rooftop with a direct line of sight to the rally scene, pressuring the Secret Service to explain what measures had been put in place ahead of the event.

The July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was the most significant operational failure by the Secret Service in decades, Cheatle told lawmakers at the House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing.

There was clearly a mistake and we will do everything we can to ensure it never happens again, she said.

Biden ordered an independent review of security protocols at the rally, where one attendee was killed and two others were seriously injured.

But lawmakers have pushed for more immediate answers from Cheatle and other U.S. law enforcement officials, including Mayorkas of the Department of Homeland Security and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Tuesday morning that Cheatle's resignation was long overdue.

Reporting from Washington DC, Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna noted that Cheatle's decision to resign comes at a critical time, just months before the US elections in November.

Trump is now set to face the presumptive Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, after Biden withdrew from the race on Sunday.

The director of the Secret Service has an extremely important position, Hanna said.
