Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday condemned the denial of entry to a dhoti-clad farmer at a Bengaluru mall and said the government would issue guidelines to stop recurrence of incidents like this.

“We will frame guidelines to include traditional attires like panche, dhoti and others so that malls and other places cannot impose entry restrictions based on certain attires. We will ensure that such incidents do not recur in the state,” he told the Legislative Assembly.

“There was a discussion on this issue on Friday, but I was unable to participate. I am now making a statement on this matter,” he added.

“The mall was served with a notice refusing entry to the farmer and was closed due to non-payment of taxes. The mall has apologized and also paid the outstanding property tax,” he said.

JDS legislature party leader Suresh Babu urged the deputy chief minister to look into the practices of some clubs which do not allow entry to people wearing sandals and dhotis.

Several farmers' unions protested against the action of the mall authorities and demanded action against them.

The police had registered an FIR against the owner and security guard of the mall.
