Do microplastic particles pose adverse health effects? Researchers outline steps to reduce risks
LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Plastic is ubiquitous and a popular material due to its convenience and low cost, but researchers are warning that tiny pieces of it, called microplastics, could pose serious health risks.
There's growing evidence that the products we use every day may be slowly negatively affecting our health.
New research has revealed that tiny particles and chemicals like BPA and phthalates, which are used in everything from plastics to furniture, food packaging and cosmetics, can find their way into our bodies.
“So these chemicals are not bound to anything in the product that makes them inactive or unable to migrate out of the product,” explained Jennifer Adibi, an assistant professor and researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.
a New study in the New England Journal of Medicine A study of plaque removed from the carotid arteries of 257 people found that more than half had measurable levels of microplastics, and health checks over the next few years showed that this group had a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.
Microplastics are also linked to a number of other health problems.
So what can you do to mitigate the risk?
“The key is to really learn what the sources are and what the alternatives are for those products,” Adibi said.
First, use glass, ceramic, or paper plates in the microwave instead of plastic containers. Look for plastics that are labeled “BPA-free.”
Also, avoid plastics with recycling codes of 3 or 7, as these may contain BPA.
Doctors say phthalates can also be found in beauty and skin care products.
It also recommends avoiding highly processed foods like chicken nuggets and heating powdered milk in glass containers rather than plastic bottles.
