Pride to take over downtown Royal Oak this weekend – Daily Tribune
Thousands of people are expected in downtown Royal Oak to celebrate the people.
The annual Royal Oak Pride takes up residence in the downtown area and features an expanded program that includes two days of entertainment in a dedicated children’s zone. Events will take place at Centennial Commons Park, the Royal Oak Farmers Market and on adjacent streets around both venues.
Events will begin with the opening ceremony on Friday at 6 p.m.
The two-day festival is organized by Pride Royal Oak, a nonprofit organization committed to promoting diversity, equality and inclusion for LGBTQ people.
“We offer a variety of resources and services to empower our community, including counseling, mentoring, and community outreach programs. Our goal is to create a society where everyone is accepted and celebrated for who they are, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We believe that every individual deserves respect, dignity, and equal rights, and we work tirelessly to make this a reality,” the committee says.
On Friday, the main stage will feature Shakespeare in the Park’s Bards and Broads, the Local Drag Showcase featuring MC Carol Lee, Ben Sharkey, Bell Bastien and Roxxxy Andrews. The Gatsby Cannabis stage will feature Alise King and DJ Astromann for those interested.
Saturday’s Pride In Voting Rally featuring local elected officials is set for 1 p.m. on the main stage, followed by Julie D and Steven Ross-Dybash, Captain Fantastic, an Elton John tribute and a local drag showcase. On the Gatsby Cannabis stage, Fusion Entertainment’s Singer Showcase kicks off at 6 p.m., with a tribute to Donna Summer, Madison Rose and Bianca Del Rio.
Christie Siegel, event organizer for the Royal Oak Farmers Market, said T-shirts with the Royal Oak Pride logo will be given away as a fundraiser. Royal Oak Pride typically draws about 20,000 people. It is sponsored by the city’s Downtown Development Authority and other sponsors, Siegel said, and will feature two main stages and a children’s area.
Organizers are still looking for volunteers, who will receive free admission to the volunteer day, a voucher for a meal and water, and a free t-shirt. Teams last three hours over the two days.
Additionally, they suggest participants park in one of four downtown parking garages, 11 Mile, Center Street, Lafayette and South Lafayette. A three-hour limit is strictly enforced at the city's parking meters.
