Michigan Football's Sherrone Moore in no rush to name starting QB
INDIANAPOLIS Just because the Michigan football team is familiar with Indianapolis doesn't mean they're done with it.
On the contrary, the hope for the Wolverines is that 135 days after Thursday, when new head coach Sherrone Moore, running back Donovan Edwards, fullback Max Bredeson and safety Makari Paige take the field during Big Ten Media Days, they will be back on the same field to compete for a fourth straight Big Ten championship.
“To the University of Michigan, our football program, our players, our coaches, our staff, what an incredible job Team 144 has done,” Moore began Thursday. “But we're ready for Team 145 to take the reins. We're excited to be here in Lucas Oil Stadium, a place where we look forward to finishing the regular season.
“I'm glad I've been able to be here these past few years. I look forward to continuing our process so that we can continue to do this in the future.”

Shortly after his opening remarks, Moore was peppered with questions about what’s different for the Wolverines this time around. After all, six coaches have left, while five others have been promoted; not to mention a record 18 players from a single program were invited to the combine, which ended with UM setting a program record with 13 players selected in the NFL draft.
While much has changed for the reigning national champions, Moore focused primarily on what has remained.
“Making sure that our culture, that our alignment stays the same,” Moore said of his primary focus since moving from offensive line coach and offensive coordinator to the head position in January. “Our players have done a great job of maintaining the culture, the camaraderie, the brotherhood, so it's really a testament to them.”
Even with three banners all block M's representing UM's recent dominance, prognosticators don't seem to believe the run can last. UM was projected to finish fourth in the Big Ten in a preseason media poll behind rival Ohio State, upstart Oregon and longtime rival Penn State.
Some might take it as an insult; the Wolverines haven't lost to the Buckeyes since 2019 and to Penn State since 2020, but those representing the Maize and Blue reacted calmly.
“That's fine,” Edwards said. “You know, people always put things on paper, but at the end of the day, it's nothing we haven't experienced at Michigan. At the end of the day, we're going to do everything we can to win every game this year.”
When will Michigan name its starting QB?
While there are a number of unknowns on the list, there is one glaring question that stands out above the rest. Who will be the starting quarterback when Michigan opens the season against Fresno State under the lights on August 31?
The three leading candidates for the fall camp are third-year student Alex Orji, master's student Jack Tuttle, and fourth-year student Davis Warren.
“They all have the attributes you need to be a successful starting quarterback at the University of Michigan,” Moore said. “The biggest thing we look for in any quarterback is that they're a playmaker; they make plays, they make good decisions, they take care of the football and they want to win.”

Each player brings something unique to the table. The most enticing option appears to be Orji, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound dual threat athlete. He has rushed the ball 21 times in his career for 123 yards and three touchdowns, but has thrown just one pass (a five-yard completion).
And then there’s Tuttle, who was the No. 2 overall pick last year before getting hurt. He’s thrown 199 career passes at both Indiana and UM, including a nice campaign in spot duty last year when he completed 15 of 17 passes for 130 yards and a score and ran four times for 35 more.
As for Warren, he didn’t complete a single pass last year (0 for 5), but threw the most consistent ball of the spring game and showed nice accuracy on his deep passes. All three will get a chance to run with the starters at some point in the fall, as they did in the spring, but don’t expect Moore to make a decision before the season starts just because it’s here.
After all, his predecessor (Jim Harbaugh) brought a quarterback competition into the 2022 season, and it worked out well when JJ McCarthy ultimately beat out Cade McNamara.
“The ideal timeline is when we feel like we have the guy that's going to help us win,” Moore said. “There's no date, no time. We're going to feel like as a staff … Kirk Campbell is a phenomenal coach, he's going to make a great decision and we're going to be there to make it together.”
Game recognize game
The Wolverines became just the fourth team in college football history to go 15-0 in a single season, joining an illustrious list that includes Georgia, Alabama and Clemson.
UM is the king of the sport until proven otherwise, and on Thursday Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck made sure to give the Wolverines their flowers. Fleck has spent the past seven years in Minneapolis and has done everything he can to make the Gophers a consistent winner.
He and athletic director Mark Coyle are the longest-tenured duo at the two positions in the conference, something Fleck says he's very proud of. The college football landscape has changed dramatically during his tenure, but Fleck has always tried to stay consistent.

“We are a transformational program, academically, athletically, spiritually, socially, spiritually, the whole life program. Our world has changed to this transactional world, with NIL, with the portal, with salary caps,” Fleck said. “We believe in the transactional piece as a piece that allows our student-athletes to benefit, but you still get this transformational life program.”
It’s a balance that every major college program tries to find, and Fleck said he believes that’s exactly what happened last year in Ann Arbor. Fleck said last year’s Michigan team proves that programs don’t have to buy their way to winning teams; it’s about finding the right pieces that fit them.
“I think Michigan proved that last year team, team team,” Fleck said. “If you build the best team, you have a chance to win. It's one thing to have the trade, but you've got to transform them.”
