SAN ANGELO, Texas — Students and staff at San Jacinto Elementary School won't be able to start the new school year on their home campus — as the San Angelo School District says recent earthquakes in the area have caused structural damage to the school's main building.

Due to damage to the load-bearing wall, which could compromise the integrity of the structure, San Jacinto kindergarten and fifth-grade students and staff will be relocated to Reagan Elementary School, the school district said in an alert to San Jacinto parents. The move is temporary, the San Jacinto school district says.

The start of school will be delayed at both schools – Monday, August 19. Transportation to Reagan will be provided for all students.

San Jacinto students and staff in Tenne Texas Schools, Early Childhood Special Education, and Pre-K are in secure buildings not connected to the damaged building on campus. They will remain in San Jacinto.

The South African Emergency Services Authority said it is working closely with structural engineers and emergency services to assess and address the situation.

San Jacinto Teacher Meet for grades K-5 has been rescheduled for 5-6 p.m. on Friday, August 16 at Reagan. San Jacinto students will be dropped off and picked up on the 16th Street side of campus and the school office will be at the main entrance off 16th Street.

Pre-K and Early Learning programs will still be open at noon on Wednesday, August 14 in San Jacinto.

The district says it will provide updates to parents, students and staff as soon as possible.

The engineers and architects were expected to attend a SAISD school board meeting Monday morning to report to the board of trustees and district administration.
