Field hockey ready for recovery in 2024 season
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. The Skidmore College field hockey team opens its season at home against Thomas College this Friday at noon. The team hopes to begin a new chapter with a return to the Liberty League playoffs in 2024.
A LOOK BACK AT 2023
Skidmore finished the 2023 season at 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the Liberty League. The team played in three exciting overtime games, all of which came in conference play. After an opening 2-1 OT win over St. Lawrence, Skidmore suffered heartbreak in a penalty shootout loss to regular season champions and 2024 preseason favorites Ithaca, as well as a double overtime loss to Union.
Additionally, seven of the team's games were decided by one goal, on top of a thrilling 3-1 game against eventual Liberty League champion William Smith that saw Skidmore tie the score late in the fourth period before the Herons responded in the final minutes of regulation.
THE PROGRAM FORWARD
Skidmore opens the season with back-to-back home games against Thomas and an away match against Salve Regina (8/31), before hosting four of its next five games at Wagner Park. The program then travels north for an away match against national powerhouse Middlebury on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The Liberty League opens at home on Saturday, September 28 against St. Lawrence. The Thoroughbreds also play conference games against RPI (10/5), Rochester (10/20) and Union (10/27).
STAR RETURNERS
The Thoroughbreds will once again have plenty of offensive firepower in 2024, including the All-Conference trio of Kayla Hassett (Second team), CC Weather (Second team) and Abby Ezickson (Honorable Mention).
The duo of Wetter and Ezickson tied for the team lead with 25 points after both scoring 11 goals and dishing out three assists each. With a team-high four goals and seven assists, Hassett was also named to the NFHCA All-Region second team.
NEWCOMERS PROGRAM
Skidmore is pleased to welcome four freshmen and one sophomore to the program.
PROGRAM HISTORY
The Thoroughbreds have won 10 league titles and appeared in the NCAA Tournament 15 times. The team has appeared in three Final Fours (2001, 2010, 2013) and has reached the national quarterfinals six times. Head CoachBeth Hallenbeckwon her 300andcompetition as Skidmore's head coach in 2022. Her overall coaching record is 383-208-3 (.647) and 313-131-2 (.704) with Skidmore.
