Coastal Bend pharmacist talks about aggressive flu vaccination efforts this year
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We're just a month away from flu season, but already there seem to be some good reasons to be proactive about staying healthy.
CVS pharmacist Raul Elizondo said it's important to get a flu shot not only to protect yourself, but to protect others in the community.
According to the CDC:9.2% increaseNumber of influenza cases this year from October 2023 onwards.
Elizondo said with COVID-19 cases increasing across the coast, influenza is also an emerging virus that people should be proactive about preventing.
“We've also noticed that many of our customers have started wearing masks because they want to protect themselves, which is a good thing. We've seen a big increase in mask wear. We've also had a few cases of the flu in the past few weeks,” Elizondo said.
Elizondo added that anyone over the age of 6 months can get a flu shot. Updating your flu shot and wearing a mask can also help.
“Of course, in most areas, you can get the flu shot,” Elizondo said, “but we also have some patients who have immune conditions that prevent them from getting vaccinated. They can't get the flu shot, so that's our job.”
Flu season officially begins in October, but some people are already taking the right precautions and booking their flu shots.
“It's not a big deal. You come in, sit down, get the shot, go outside and you don't get the flu. It really does protect you,” said resident Richard Abbink.
“There's a lot of epidemics and other illnesses going on in this environment,” resident Mike Perez added. “You never know what else you could catch. I'd rather be infected. Better to be safe than sorry.”
Experts say that vaccines, like the flu shot, only become effective after two weeks of being administered, so the sooner you get it, the better.
