New hope for heart disease as science enables early detection and prevention | Heart Disease
Scientists say they are making progress towards the early detection and prevention of heart disease. The development is the result of a 30-year program that monitored thousands of women to assess their susceptibility to heart disease.

Researchers collected blood samples and medical information from 27,939 U.S. health care workers between 1992 and 1995. Thirty years later, 3,662 study participants had experienced a heart attack, stroke, circulatory restoration surgery, or death from cardiovascular disease.
Levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, were measured, along with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and Lp(a), a lipid composed partly of LDL.
When the three markers of LDL cholesterol, Lp(a) and CRP were assessed together, participants with the highest levels had a more than 1.5-fold increased risk of stroke and a more than three-fold increased risk of coronary heart disease compared with women with the lowest levels. The researchers noted that although only women were assessed, similar results would likely be seen in men.
To prevent these fats and proteins from building up in the blood, the researchers stressed measures such as regular exercise, a healthy diet, stress management and avoiding smoking.

Other measures include drugs to lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation. Crucially, the earlier these interventions are taken, the better one's health will be years or even decades down the line, scientists say.
