India reports case of MPOX infection in traveller from endemic country
On September 8, the Indian Ministry of Health announced that a suspected case of MPOX had been found in a man who had recently traveled from a country where the virus is spreading.
The patient is in isolation in hospital and is in stable condition, the ministry said.
The ministry did not say which strain of the MPOX virus the patient was infected with, but tests were being carried out to confirm the infection.
Mpox is spread by close contact and is usually mild but can be fatal in rare cases, causing flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions on the body.
“The case is being managed in line with established protocols and contact tracing is ongoing to identify the potential source of infection and assess its impact in the country,” the ministry said.
Last month, daily newspaper The Hindu reported that India was on high alert after the new MPOX strain began ravaging Africa.
