Children test positive for West Nile virus in Orange County – NBC Los Angeles
Children who tested positive for West Nile virus were the first to be infected in Orange County this year, officials said Monday.
According to the Orange County Healthcare Agency, children of age and identity protection were diagnosed and hospitalized last week but are expected to recover. This was the first time a person in the county was infected this year.
The state reports in 2020 that it has so far infected 10 people across the state.
County officials said a total of seven people signed the West Nile in the area last year.
One in every five West Nile infected with no cure has symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea and skin rash. Symptoms may last for days to months.
One in every 150 infected with the virus requires hospitalization. Severe symptoms include high fever, weakness, stiff neck, coma, paralysis and possibly death. The people at greatest risk are the elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems.
People over the age of 50 with underlying illness are at increased risk.
“The best way to avoid West Nile virus infection is to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites,” said Dr. Kreighton Chau, director of the Orange County Health Department and county interim chief health officer. ..
