Health Alert: New York State reports first EEE case in nearly a decade
new york – New York state reported its first case of eastern equine encephalitis in nearly a decade on Friday.
The New York State Department of Health said the rare mosquito-borne virus has been detected in Ulster County, and that an infected person has been hospitalized.
The Ulster County Health Department is currently investigating the case, which health officials say is the first confirmed case of EEE in New York state since 2015.
“Eastern equine encephalitis is a serious and deadly mosquito-borne disease for which there is no vaccine,” New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James MacDonald said in a statement. “Although temperatures are dropping, mosquito-borne diseases remain a danger and New Yorkers need to be vigilant.”
The human cases come after a horse case of EEE was confirmed in Ulster County in August, according to the state health department. Earlier this month, two emus in Rensselaer County, New York, also tested positive for the virus, but the virus cannot be transmitted directly from birds to humans, the department said.
The recent cases of EEE in New York bring the national total this year to at least 11, according to an ABC News tally. The national average is 11 cases per year, with most cases occurring in eastern or Gulf Coast states.
Besides New York, at least six other states have reported cases this year, including four in Massachusetts, two in New Hampshire, and one each in New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.
Between 2003 and 2023, at least 196 cases of EEE have been reported in the United States, including 176 hospitalizations and 79 deaths.
The best way to prevent infection with the disease is to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants, disinfecting clothing and equipment, and taking mosquito control measures both indoors and outdoors.
“Following the first confirmed human cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Ulster County, we urge residents to take recommended precautions to prevent the risk of infection from mosquito bites,” Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger said in a statement.
Most people infected with EEE don't show symptoms, but those who do may experience fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, behavioral changes and drowsiness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
About one-third of people who become seriously ill will die, according to the CDC.
